What do you do when you don't know where to start a piece?

I get asked that question a lot. The situation's a little different than writer's block, which is when I don't know what to write. But when you've got a lot of good information and no clear idea of what to put first, it can be almost as paralyzing.

My cure? I just start writing what I think of as a section. Today I'm writing about Country Strong, Gwyneth Paltrow's latest movie. I've got a ton of great stuff, but I'm at a loss as to what to lead with. So I started  writing the "scenes" section, in which we deconstruct a few sequences the crew found especially challenging or moving. Next, I did the "inspiration" section, where I provide background on the genesis of the story. Once I get all the sections written, I may have a lede in there somewhere, or I'll be able to write one.

Next time you're at a loss for a place to start, try this technique. Let me know how it works for you!
