When I hung out my shingle 16 years ago, I relied on interns from the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication to help me grow the business. They got training and experience; I got smart, young people willing to work as hard as I did.

Two of those interns have recently “come home” to The Word Factory. Over the next few days, I’ll introduce you to them, as well as some other folks who’re working with us. Today, I’d like to introduce you to Claire Parker. You can read her bio here.

Claire first interned for me in 1997. During her tenure, she was involved in writing, design and strategy projects. And when I reduced my workload for six weeks to write The Real Life Guide to Starting Your Career, Claire took the reins of The Word Factory and kept the gears turning. That’s a lot of responsibility for a college senior, and she handled it beautifully.

Today, Claire’s a successful freelance writer with a solid understanding of business -- and we’re thrilled to have her back. Her primary responsibility at the Factory is researching and writing about real estate and architecture, and crafting personality profiles for Cancer Lines, the UNC Lineberger Cancer Center’s newsletter. She’s also a solid feature writer. This kind of versatility makes her a fantastic addition to our team.

Well, that’s all the news for today. Time for me to head back to the factory floor.
