There's a lot of learning left to do for us white folks. I've been trying to learn more about Black history in America, and the legacy of white supremacist culture and anti-Black racism. Besides workshops and webinars, I'm doing a lot of reading. I'm going to assume you've read the moving and informative The 1619 Project by now. (Here's the link if you haven't. There's also a show currently on Hulu.) Here are some books I recommend:
- Caste: The Origins of Our Discomfort by Isabel Wilkerson
- Looking for Lorraine: The Radiant and Radical Life of Lorraine Hansberry by Imani Perry
- The Cooking Gene: A Journey Through African American Culinary History in the Old South by Michael W. Twitty
- Slaves in the Family by Edward Ball
- Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
- Lifting as We Climb by Evette Dionne
- How to Be an Anti-Racist by Ibram X. Kendi
- Stamped: Racism, Anti-Racism and You by Ibram X. Kendi and Jason Reynolds
- The Yellow House: A Memoir by Sarah M. Broom
We've got work to do. Get busy!
